has a historical footing but its brutal depiction of events plays more like a horror. It has a dark quality provided by a combination of a slow burning pace and fantastic cinematic depiction. One of the talking points at the time was that it was scripted only in languages of the period, Aramaic and Latin to be precise, and was therefore subtitled for us non-speakers of these dead languages. Instead of detracting this seemed to make the viewing more intense and in any case the amount of language was minimal and the well-choreographed scenes spoke for themselves through body language, expert direction and skilled acting. Many have been put off by the religious subject matter but I would say that whilst the Catholics and Jews reveal in and argue about the guilt of who really was responsible for Christ's death, the rest of us should just wallow in a powerful film.

Whilst people argued over how truthful a depiction this was of Homers work, they forgot that the great mans story was itself the Hollywood of its day, epic story telling designed to be a good story first and foremost above any historical content. A host of stars, Brad Pitt, Brian Cox, Sean Bean, Orlando Bloom, Eric Bana, bring the story to the screen. Great settings, armies of thousands, great one on one combat and all the follies of war and human ego do the Iliad justice and deliver a fantastic action flick along the way. It's just a pity that Sean Bean still sounds like a Sheffield trucker but you can't have everything.

Two ancient races, one Vampiric the other Lycanthropic, that's werewolves to you and me, are engaged in an ongoing struggle to wipe the other out. A cross between the hi-tech and high kick action of The Matrix and the brooding horror of the vampire classics, this is a nice turn on a genre that had seemingly been done to death. Seeing Kate Beckinsale in skin-tight leather does have the added bonus for at least half of the population.
6.Aliens
As good as Alien, the first of the series, was, its sequel Aliens actually pulled off the seeming impossible and delivered and even better film. Combining the same sci-fi and horror in the dark and claustrophobic environs of deep space facilities, this film returned Ripley (Sigourney Weaver)

A list of best movies is so very subjective. And such a list almost always suffers from the biases and lack of knowledge
