Hope you don't mind me making this a top ten as I would find it impossible to limit it to just five, ten was hard enough as it was. Apologies over and on with the show.
Films for me have always been an escape mechanism from the humdrum of everyday concerns. For those two hours or so films have the ability to take you to another place, at one extreme a different life in a world that you are familiar with, at the other a whole fantasy realm where everything is different. My own personal favourites tend to lie in the furthest reaches of the imagination, be it historical, science fiction, horror or pure fantasy. A few things will always govern the compilation of a top ten list of any sort and one of the main factors is how high up in the memory the item in question is. In this case more recently watched films seem be retained higher up in the consciousness than those further back in time and I am aware of this but as my list spans twenty years or more then I think that it is fairly balanced. Another factor is that our tastes change over time and as such our favourites do tend to move around in order of priority, my number one choice has however been fixed in the all-time number one slot since I first saw it, but more of that later. So grab your popcorn, hot dog and 14 gallon bucket of coke, sit back and let the silver screen take you to another worldor ten.
10. Finding Neverland.
This is the only film in the list that is set in the real world, well partially set in the real world. In one of the most understated roles of his career, Johnny Depp plays the playwright J.M Barrie. Caught in a loveless marriage and suffering from a string of poorly received plays Barrie is looking for inspiration to write that one play that will make his name. Whilst sitting in a park he meets a society widow and her four children and swiftly becomes close to them all. Watched by the disapproving eyes of proper society this innocent relationship produces a summer of fun and happiness for all concerned and when Barrie commits the imaginary games he played with the children to paper, the play that he sought springs to life and becomes a run away successPeter Pan. It is a mixture of heart-warming relationships and fantasy trips through the imagination and will leave a tear in the eye of even the most cynical. The most gentle fantasy film ever.
9.The Passion of the Christ
Mel Gibson's controversial film really mixed up the genres. As the depiction of the last 12 hours in the life of Christ it

A list of best movies is so very subjective. And such a list almost always suffers from the biases and lack of knowledge
