Small and simple changes can make a significant reduction in energy use. Cut usage by being aware, changing habits, and making inexpensive purchases.
Fluorescent light bulbs are proven energy savers. Four 60 watt bulbs used for 6 hours a day, and two 100 watt bulbs for 3 hours, changed to fluorescent can save nearly $200 a year! The cost of fluorescent bulbs are higher, yet they pay for themselves in no time. Consider lightning needs, a lower watt bulb will light an area sufficiently and save energy.
Televisions, stereos, DVD players and other electronics are drawing energy when not in use. Sitting idle 40% of the electricity used during operation is consumed when plugged in. Unplug these when not in use. If the location of the plug is inconvenient use power strips to disconnect from the source. Coffee makers, toasters, blenders and other appliances continue to draw power when not in use, unplug these when finished.
Kitchens are a large source of energy use in any home. Use pots appropriate to the amount of food being cooked. Avoid using 4-6 quart pots to cook one pound of pasta, instead use the 2 quart size. This reduces the time needed to heat the water and cook the pasta. Use the correct size burner, fill pans with hot water when setting them to boil, avoid preheating ovens unless baking, and turn burners off before removing pans.
Microwave cooking uses less energy. Heating frozen or canned vegetables and steaming fresh ones in the microwave saves energy. Unplug the coffee pot and reheat your second cup in the microwave. Reheating leftovers is best done in the microwave as we all know.
Adjusting the temperature in your freezer and refrigerator can save energy too. Turn down the setting in your freezer slowly and find a lower setting that freezes food. Do the same with the refrigerator. Wise placement of food allows for lower settings without sacrificing the longevity of food.
Thermostat settings save large amounts of energy. Plastic sheeting is simple to use and cost effective, cover windows to reduce drafts. Drawing curtains and shades on the sunny windows reduces the cost of cooling. In winter reverse the process allowing the sun to warm your home. Dress appropriate to the weather when inside. Wearing a sweater in winter months, having afghans and lap quilts available keeps you warmer, thus reducing cost.
Reducing the temperature in your hot water heater by ten degrees F can save between 3% and 5% in energy costs. Manufacturers settings of 140 degrees can be changed, most households require a temperature of 120 degrees. Don't allow water to run the steadily while washing dishes, run full loads in a dishwasher, taking showers instead of baths and using cold or warm water in laundry add up too.
Simple changes in your home and lifestyle add up to money in your pocket. Awareness of energy usage is essential, be mindful of your habits it makes a difference.
