Lymphoma: Symptoms and treatment

Lymphoma is a common form of cancer. It originates in lymphocytes(a type of white blood cell in the immune system). The lymphatic system(which is another part of the body's immune system) is where the lymphocytes reside. In this system, a group of lymph vessels carries clear fluid called lymph. They lead to small, round organs called lymph nodes. The lymph nodes work as a filter to fight harmful infections, bacteria and disease, that may be in the lymph.

A network of lymph nodes are found in the neck, underarms, chest, abdomen,a nd groin. A variety of lymph nodes are also found in other parts of the body.

Lymphoma starts when errors occur in the DNA of lymphocytes. One of these cells under goes a transformation into a malignant(aggressive)cell and begins to grow abnormally. As lymphoma progress, it makes multiple copies of itself, killing most of the good cells. This causes the body to weaken and become helpless against many infections.
The cause is unknown, but it is curable in most cases.

Some symptoms are:
. lymph node swelling- the node is usually not painful as opposed to infected lymph nodes which are common and painful
. a lack of energy, general fatigue
. weight loss- usually at least 10% over a short time
. fevers that come and go
. night sweats
. itching without an apparent cause or rash

If any of these symptoms occur, seek medical advice from your local doctor or a medical professional. Get a physical examination for proper diagnosis.

There are two basic categories of lymphoma: Hodgkins lymphoma(also called Hodgkins disease)and Non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
Specific lymphocytes involvement is the difference between the two.

. Hodgkins lymphoma is marked by the presence of an abnormal lymphocyte called the Reed-Sternberg cell(or B lymphocyte).

. Non-Hodgkins lymphoma(NHL)consists of all other types of lymphomas. It develops from white-blood cells in the bone marrow, spleen, thymus, and lymph nodes.

There are several types of Non-Hodgkins lymphoma:

.Burkitts lymphoma
.CNS lymphoma
.Leudemia lymphoma

Some treatment options are:
.chemotherapy
.radiation
.st em cell transplant
.biotherapy
.radioimm unotherapy
.interferon therapy

A few factors may affect the choice of treatment, including your age, your overall medical condition, and the type and stage of your lymphoma.
Sit down with your doctor to discuss which option is best for you.
