In My Eyes...My Best Friend

What makes a woman beautiful? Is it the size of the clothes she wears or the ability to grace the covers of fashion magazines? Society's vision of beauty is a perfect body and a flawless complexion, mostly enhanced by trick photography. My idea of beauty is a little bit different. I look for what is on the inside that shines through. A face that is plain, made extraordinary with the flash of a smile, or the strength of character that shows with laugh lines and a straight forward look from eyes that shine with intelligence. Every woman is a person of beauty in some way.

I know a woman who is absolutely beautiful in my eyes. We have been friends since about fifth grade. We are now in our forties. I have seen her large and small, clear of face and with breakouts. She has seen me too. We have watched each other mature through the years, even lived through the bad fashions of the eighties. Of course, she thinks she is nothing special and quite ordinary. I wish she could see herself through my eyes.

This woman has the most luxurious, thick, brown hair that is shot through with sprinkles of silver that highlight her beloved head. She has large, intelligent green eyes that darken to a deep forest when angry or concerned, and sparkle mischieviously when her earthy and bawdy sense of humor is sparked. She has a button nose and a cupid's bow mouth framed by an oval face. She is very practical and down to earth, too much so sometimes. I love to do and say silly and outrageous things so I can watch her roll her eyes and let loose a large, bawdy, belly laugh.

She is loyal and is as protective as a mother bear to those she loves. Her generous heart is housed in a pleasingly rounded figure of medium or average height. She has a clear porcelain complexion that tans easily, except when she burns and takes on the look of a cooked lobster that only needs butter for dipping. She has very dainty and feminine hands and feet.

Now as nice as all this is, I am in no hurry to declare her a saint just yet. There are always two sides to everything, and she is no one dimensional character. I have seen her green eyes flash flame and her cupid bow mouth spit fire. Her voice becomes loud and abrasive, not to mention she can make the most hardened sailor want to jump ship when she is irate. She has also spawned two beings in her own image. I don't know if the world is big enough for all three.

Truly, this is no ordinary woman. She is generous and loving. She is loyal and faithful. She is selfless, unless of course, she is eating lemons. However, she will let me have a slice or two, now and then. She is a mother, daughter, and wife. She is beautiful. She is my best friend and I thank her for all the years she has been there for me.
