2008 saw the release of yet another Indiana Jones movie. This rampaging archaeologist marauded his way through jungles and movie theaters giving archeology a bad name. It's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls.
The real crystal skulls have been described as having come from pre-Columbian Mesoamerican societies. The skulls have legends that are held in the theologies of not only Mesoamerican societies but Native American peoples north of Mexico.
The crystal skulls are a group; many say there are 13, of models of human skulls made from blocks of quartz crystal. They are lovely things to behold any that have been looked at through the eyes of modern science has shown some evidence of being manufactured in either the late 19th or early 20th century. One of the problems with the skulls is that they in no way share any characteristics with true Mesoamerican pre-Columbian skulls, which are made from items other than crystal.
The Maya or Aztec cultures of Central America have been accused of, or credited with, creating the crystal skulls. They are claimed to have been found within temples or pyramids.
Perhaps one of the more famous skulls is the Mitchell-Hedges skull. Apparently in 1924 Anna Mitchell-Hedges found the skull inside a temple in Lubaantun, Belize. Her father, Fredrick Mitchell-Hedges was excavating the area and had apparently brought little Anna along for the trip. Oddly, others who were on the 1924 dig don't recall Anna ever being at the site.
Those believers claim the skulls have paranormal and spiritual powers. There are those who believe that the lives of those who come into contact with the skulls will have their lives improved. There are also claims of not only an Atlantean connection but also an extraterrestrial connection, it seems that ET brought the skulls to the planet for reasons we don't fully understand yet.
The scientific community, while admiring the artistry of the cut crystal, does believe the skulls are faked and that Mitchell-Hedges purchased the skull in 1943from a Sotheby's auction.
There always exists the chance that Sotheby's is mistaken about the sale of the skull to Mitchell-Hedges. What if some of the crystal skulls that have yet to be tested by science? If the crystal skulls did turn out to be real they could well change, not only the history of man but perhaps also the future of mankind depending on their meaning.
If we find out that some of those skulls were from space and left here by aliens the news would shock the world. We would be able to do away with S.E.T.I. and perhaps we might end up coming together, the world that is, as a species in both defense of the Earth and exploration of the universe. Maybe this might help us find a way to stop hatred, prejudice, violence, starvation and all other earthly ills. At least that's what I hope will happen.
Regardless, in time we will truly see what is up with the crystal skulls and we will then, of course, know if they are real and how they will have affected us.
