How to evaluate your life and move forward in a positive direction

In every life there are times and events which make us stop and take stock of ourselves, our lives and our futures. Sometimes we are prompted by loss, sometimes by fear, sometimes by sudden changes, sometimes by the inevitable movement from one part of life's cycle to another. Whatever the reason, we can take advantage of these opportunities to reflect on life, relationships and the future. They can be of great value to us, specially if we approach them positively and directly.

One of the best ways to move forward is to start by looking back. Not, as most usually do, by looking at the things we wish we had done better, but by concentrating on the things we have done well. So take a look at yourself and your own life. Avoid comparing yourself with anyone else. With pen and paper or in front of your computer, write down, just for yourself, the answers to these questions:

- What are your greatest achievements?
- What are you most proud of?
- What were the greatest opportunities you took advantage of?
- Who have you reached out to and helped?
- Whose help made a difference in your life?

Have you written down everything you can think of? Are you sure? Then look at the person you are now. Reflect on what you have, where you are, who you are. Ask yourself - and write down the answers:

- What are the best things about you?
- What are your greatest strengths?
- What gives you the most joy?
- Who are the most important people in your life?

Now you are ready to build on the most solid foundation there is - all that is best about yourself. Hold on to that as you look ahead, and find the answers to these questions:

- Where do you want to go from here?
- What is the most important thing you would like to accomplish?
- What do you need to do to get to where you would like to be?
- Where would you like to be in five years?
- In ten years?

Now that you have considered all these things it is time to create a new road map for yourself. As you get ready to do that, consider:

- Are there changes you need to make?
- Are there new things you need to learn?
- Is there a first step, no matter how small, you can take right now?
- Of the people you know, who can help you?
- Of the people you know, who will support you?

Your answers will help you define where you want to go from here. Then it's time to decide on specific steps you need to take to get there. Once you begin to see the way you are ready set out on the journey into the next part of your life, a step at a time. May your journey have many happy steps.
