The world's best and worst airports

by Icy Ice

I have been to ariports in Europe, Asia, America (North and South), Australia and Africa. To me the best airport is Changi Airport, Singapore.

When you step out of the plane, there are shops all over the airport and it gives you the feeling that you are in a shopping mall instead of an airport. It is especially ideal for those who are on transit. There are shower rooms (you have to pay for this service) and a movie room which screens free movies one after another with a short interval. There is also a spa service and a hourly room rental at the aiport. Of course, these services don't come cheap.

After the immigration process, there is a large duty free shop. There are luggage trollys available for free. There are some airports which charges almost US$2 for a trolly. Once you remove your luggage from the trolly, the proter quickly pushes the trolly away.

Although the airport is at the eastern tip of Singapore, there is an effecient transport system that brings you to the city centre. It is very different from the KLIA where it is far from the city centre and not easily assessilbe by subway. Here, the Changi Airport has a well-connected subway and so are the buses. Taxis are easily available at the airport. However, the taxi charges can be very confusing. There are lots of hidden charges in addition to the metered fare. Well, this is not the fault of the airport operators, but the taxi.

There are three terminals over at the Changi Airport. They are inter-connected by rail. A short rail ride will take you from one terminal to another. Unlike some airports where you have to take the bus which are perpetually crowded and late, the rail is comfortable and on time. By the way, the rail is driverless. Probably that is why the rail is alway on time.
If you are early for your flight, there are shops and eating places in the airport. The airport is very spacious unlike some American and European airports which are sardin packed.

What I like most about the airport is that is has a very comfortable surrounding and welcoming. The directional signs are easily understood, mainly in English, Chinese and Japanese, I think. If you do not understand any of these languages, the pictures can do the explaination. The toilets adopts the open concept; meaning you can see what is outside and at some toilets, even the aeroplanes. Not to worry. Those outside the toilets can't see what is inside.

I understand that there are local who go all the way to the airport to shop and eat even though they are not taking a plan or expecting someone returning from overseas.
