How to plan an unforgettable family vacation

Hopefully your unforgettable family vacation will be a pleasant one for the memory books! By setting a plan in motion you will be guaranteed to have fun. If you and your family do not get along on a daily basis, do not expect everyone to get along while on vacation. Now, it would be nice to assume that everyone will get along; but do not set yourself up for disappointment. Plan a good old fashioned road trip and you will be guaranteed to have an unforgettable family vacation.

Come up with a destination in mind that will be sure to interest everyone in your family. Think about the scenery and if you have any family members that love the outdoors. The beach, mountains, valleys, and lakes would be places to look into. For someone that loves architecture, how about incorporating a visit to a Frank Lloyd Wright House along the way? If you are traveling with teens a water park or amusement park could be one activity to toss on the agenda. This could be a road trip with something for everyone. Each state has a web site where you can send for travel information in regards to accommodations, attractions, community events, and suggestions for things to do. Be sure to send for this information at least six weeks before you plan to leave home. This way you will have plenty of time to review the material and plan your vacation.

Now you need to incorporate the memories that will be unforgettable for everyone. Get out the family tree and see who lives in an area that you have mapped out. By visiting a long, lost relative; your children will see how easy it is to reconnect with people that have several things in common with you. If you do succeed in going out to dinner with a relative you have not seen in a long time designate one of your children as the photographer. This way you will have many pictures and all of you will have an unforgettable family vacation.

Keep in mind that there will be times when everyone will not get along. And, if your luck is anything like mine, it will rain! Hopefully you will have included rain gear in your luggage. Have a plan in action should you have an outdoor activity planned and the weather does not cooperate. Maybe a zoo with many indoor attractions or a museum. There are numerous museums of all types all across the United States. Something as simple as Monopoly can be enjoyed by the whole family when played in a new setting.

Lodging can be another interesting scenario. If you are camping, it is always a good idea to have reservations ahead of time. There is nothing worse than being in the middle of nowhere and all of the campgrounds have no sites available. This can make everyone extremely miserable. I would also suggest the same in regards to hotels and motels. During the Summer vacation season and holidays they tend fill their rooms quickly. There are numerous travel web sites that offer online reservations. I have found the simplest way to book a room on line is to go directly to the hotel or motel chain that you would like to stay at. The rates are usually very competitive and if you do have a problem with your billing the situation is easily corrected.

Remember to relax and have fun. You will have good times and just like every other day there will be issues. If your kids are anything like mine, vacations tend to bring out the sibling rivalry in rare form! One good thing, they do remember each vacation and can usually recall when and where that melt down occurred!
