Also, let's not forget that credit card debt is a form of unsecured loan. If you get in over your head on credit card debt, and then decide to do a debt consolidation loan (which is a secured loan, normally securing your home as collateral), you have now turned that unsecured debt into secured debt and you now have a much higher penalty for defaulting on that loan.
