Coronary heart disease: Symptoms and treatment

The Symptoms and Treatment of Coronary Heart Disease is such a wide based topic that we could fill a small library with the materials written in only the past 5 years. This subject covers such things as heart bypass, all sorts of valve problems, degenerative heart muscles and a plethora of other problems

Let us begin a tour of the heart to understand the principles and purpose behind this truly remarkable organ. The heart begins beating before you put in an appearrance on this earth, and has been operated on while the baby is still in the mother - a truly remarkable feat! If everything is working correctly the blue blood from the vein system is re-oxygenated in the lungs and pumped back up to the heart where it goes through a system of valves and back out to the body. If you were to cut open any semi-major artery it would shoot blood a minimum of 4-5 feet through the air. The system is designed to operate continuously, night and day, pumping away at a rate of a low 45-50 pulse to over 100 pulse. Even after a patient has been declared "brain dead" the autonomic system takes over the continues to operate the heart.

Some of the foibles of the heart are difficult to understand. For instance, many babies are born with a leaky heart! It stays that way until they are somewhere between 6 months and 2 years old with no intervention needed. In later life you can develop Arythmia or Tachycardia where your heart has an uneven gait or simply runs off at wild speeds. You may also find that when you exercise or do certain activities you develop chest pains, or Angina. A little rest and you are back at your task again, only to repeat the problem with increased heart rate. Valve problems result when the material in your intake and output valves do not match up with the seat and blood leaks into the wrong chamber. Surprisingly, age, by itself, is not a pre-cursor of heart disease or problems. Degenerative heart muscles have a wide range of symptons, but can generally be tracked down by the lack of blood moving through the required process. Heart attacks and similar problems can be as a result of of a trauma, like a car accident, or the wear and tear of the years, or the result of chemical problems.

Any sympton of angina, or heart area pain, should be checked by a cardiologist immediately. Most of the time your family physician will catch your symptons and refer you on to a cardiologist - if not you should insist upon seeing someone with the specialized training and equipment to look at your problem. The equipment of todays cardiology office tracks the process so accurately that the usual heart problems are pinpointed to one side, or one end of the heart where the details of treatment can begin.

Treating heart problems often times involved testing to determine the exact nature of the illness. If the exact spot where the problem is occurring is not pinpointed, often the therapy will not accurately overcome the problem.

The medication for heart problems is vastly improved over even 5 years ago. To ignore heart problems based on poor side effects and other out of date information is to ask for more heart problems.

A heart problem ignored and put off for another day, is a disaster waiting to occur. Once lost, a heart capacity is rarely restored without problems and is often lost for good!
