The 1950's were a much simpler time, when father's got monogrammed handkerchiefs from their children every Fathers Day. They got them for their birthday and Christmas too. These were a useful gift but after all how many does any one man need? They were however, just about the only thing that kids could afford to give to their dad. These along with homemade cards were the normal gifts that fathers cherished.
Today it is a lot harder to find appropriate Fathers Day gifts many of today's fathers are very much like those fathers from the past, the handmade cards and spending the day with him are the best gift that you can give. So if you don't have a lot of money don't worry, dad's don't count that.
Give Dad a gift certificate from you for a free car wash. You can put it in a bucket with some sponges, car wax and a good chamois cloth, or if you have no money just the coupon is fine. If you are into detailing like some sons are, this is always a very much appreciated gift.
For the father who is a fisherman some lures and a special rubber worms will be something he appreciates. Let the kids or grand-kids lose in the fishing department and even if they don't pick the perfect thing, it is the thought that counts.
Give Dad a restaurant gift certificate to his favorite restaurant. It is always a treat these days to get to go out on somebody else's buck. Even better, take dad out for a meal and get to spend some one on one time with him.
If Dad is getting on in years, give him a gift certificate entitling him to your services with some big project he may have around the house. Dads are sometimes too proud to ask their children for help. Maybe you could clean the gutters or help him paint the basement. Try to turn it into an occasion to spend some time together.
Plan a special breakfast in bed for dad. This is one day of the year that he should not have to get up early and go to work. Fix him whatever is his personal favorite, it is a luxury that few dads can refuse.
What ever you decide to do, it isn't about how much money you spend, it is about how well you know your dad and how much time you spend with him. Give dad the gift of yourself this Father's Day, it is what 9 out of 10 dads would prefer.
