Dangers of Rebounding (mini-trampolines)

Dangers of Rebounding. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> I remember playing on my mom's little trampoline when I was a kid. I actually think my sister and I used it more than she did. And like all things old, the trampoline is enjoying a resurgence of interest as a fitness tool. Much to the delight of children everywhere I am sure. And while this new old fitness method comes with many benefits, there are also dangers to consider as well. So before bouncing to your heart's content (a stronger heart being one of the key benefits of rebounding) read on to ensure your workouts remain safe and enjoyable. Danger #1 Falling. This may seem obvious, but many assume that because of the trampolines relative closeness to the ground that there is little danger in falling off during a workout. However, for those with balance issues the very act of trying to stand still and balanced on a trampoline can pose a serious challenge. Work on core strength and stability by simply beginning each workout with a moment or two of stillness on your trampoline. For the elderly and balance challenged the use of a compatible rail support system is highly recommended. And can generally be picked up when purchasing your new rebounder. Danger #2 Sprains and Strains While rebounding has been touted as the non-impact cardio champion, those with weak connective tissues are at risk for suffering sprains and strains when advancing their workouts too quickly. If you are new to rebounding take a few workouts to gently increase the duration and intensity of your workout to ensure that your body is adapting as needed to protect you on the unstable surface. Always begin each workout session with a gentle warm up to evaluate your stability for the day and to ease your joints into the rebounding movement. This warm up period should keep you out of harms way and bouncing with glee. Danger #3 Equipment Failure While rare, it is possible for the spring attachments securing the rebounding surface to the frame to give way during a workout. The only way to avoid such events is to evaluate your trampoline on a regular basis. If you notice any wear or fraying on the trampoline attachments it is time to take it in for service or consider purchasing anew one. Another common product defect is with the stretch protective cover that keeps the spring system away from the user. If you are an aggressive jumper or are landing on the protective cover during your movements it too may begin to breakdown and fray. A replacement may be acquired from the manufacturer, so check your users manual for more information. And while all of the above dangers are real, it is possible to enjoy many safe and fun workouts with your mini-trampoline for years to come. It is a great way to increase your cardio capacity, burn more calories and protect your joints through non-impact activity. So don't be afraid to give rebounding a try. Just keep the above dangers in mind and you will be fine.
