Babysitting Woes<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> It was the spring of 1959, when Janie called her best friend Rachel. "Hey, whatcha you doin' Saturday?" she said when the phone was answered. "Why, what do you wanna do?" "Oh, I was just wondering if you'd like to go shopping with me to buy a PROM DRESS!" She said screaming the last two words. "What? Are you going to prom?" "Well, yes, why else would I need a dress?" "Who's taking you?" "Oh just Kevin, he asked me and my mom said yes. I'm so excited." "Kevin! You're going with Kevin?" "Yes, what's wrong with that?" "It's just that he's so, sowell, you know, not exactly a heartthrob." "Kevin's is one of the best friends I've ever had, besides you of course, and a good dancer as well. A girl would be a fool to miss a chance to go to the prom, no matter who she goes with." "Yea, you're right, it'd be foolish to miss a chance like that and I'd love to go shopping Saturday. While we're out, I can pick out a dress for myself." "You're going too? Why didn't you tell me? "Okay, let's meet at the corner down from your house at ten o'clock. I think the bus comes a little after ten." "Sounds good, I'll see you then." Saturday morning, the girls met up at the stop and chatted excitedly about their shopping trip. "I hope we can find something nice and that doesn't cost arm and a leg," Janie confided to her friend. "I only have seventy dollars and I still need to get some shoes." "Oh, I'm sure we will. There has to be something reasonable out there in the big wide world of dress stores. I don't have much more than that myself." Getting off the bus in downtown <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /
>Hollywood, Florida Janie noticed a classy looking little shop. "Hey, this looks like a nice place, let's see what they have." As the girls entered the store they looked around at all of the dresses on the racks. "May I help you?" a pleasant looking woman asked them. "Yes Mam, we're looking for prom dresses." "Well, I think you've come to the right place. We have a very nice selection, so you girls look around and if you see anything you're interested in, just let me know and I'll show you to the dressing room." "Thank you," Rachel said and grabbing Janie's hand pulled her toward one of the racks. "Look at
