The cinematic delight of the movie Sex and the City was incredible. This television show has been the bonding experience for many family members and friends of mine. A women's " Hurrah!" in the age of spoiled, child-like men, Sex and the City allowed the REAL truth to come out in regards to dating, sex, and love in the world of today. The day that the television show said it's goodbye, the women who loved, cried, and screamed along with the characters, were left lost and utterly alone. Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha became friends to the lonely, therapists to the troubled, and family to all that watched.
The movie picks up three years after the series ends. The women are all in similar roles but different and more adult than before. Carrie and the notorious Mr. Big are surprisingly still together and even discussing their future. She is still in her apartment, and her column and books are continuing successes. The question that looms, though, is how big of a commitment will Mr. Big be willing to make?
Samantha is in Hollywood with her waiter turned model turned actor boyfriend, Smith Jerrod. The two have been through rocky terrain, and Samantha seems to finally have settled down. But the lure of the unknown, specifically unknown MEN, has always taunted her. Will she finally become an adoring woman of a successful man? Or will the strong will and self-love push Samantha to the edge?
Charlotte has the picture perfect life. She married her love, Harry, and they adopted a Chinese daughter, Lily. What more could she ask for? Charlotte is in for a wonderful surprise in her life, but will the pressure bring her unwanted stress?
Finally, Miranda. Overworked, under appreciated, living in BROOKLYN- how much could one woman take? She is the rock of the group and certainly the most independent. How much of her independence and drive will take a toll on her family and , most importantly, her marriage?
This movie, these women, are a tribute to every woman out there. Young and old, rich and poor, clueless and stylish, the essential heart of this is the reality that all women live in: we just want to be heard, understood, and loved. Not all of us are brave enough to tell our story with no boundaries, no gray area. That is why we love the four spectacular women of Sex and the City. They can tell our thoughts, emotions, secret desires, and we can laugh or cry in silent agreement. They are US, and we are grateful.
