Movie reviews: Sex and the City

Sexy? No. Interesting? No.

Sex and The City has to be one of the most bombastic, product placing, mind-numbing movies on record. Yet, for all the air-headed gestures, the stupidity and the one-line jokes (the funniest bits of the film involve someone pooing their pants and other slap stick almost disgusting ideas), Sex and The City offers us something that the cinema has been lacking for a while - total switch off.

Believe me - apparently this film provides nothing but total switch off - for almost two hours.

But, after being bombarded with high tech, thrill packed action films like Indiana Jones, being bamboozled with futuristic catastrophes like The Day After Tomorrow and others, we are an audience ripe for a film like SATC.

It is unrealistic, full of unbelievable characters who, after you exit the cinema, disappear from your mind like the puffs of air they are and this is what makes the film almost credible.

Apparently it is so over the top, so utterly silly that you find yourself day dreaming while it is on. How many films give us the opportunity to pay, go into a dark place and totally zone out for that length of time?

Carrie is a floozie- the rest are her 'gang'. It is as if the playground gang grew up, put on some mind blowingly high heels, fluffed out their skirts and oh yes, discovered men and sex.

That's why it is almost good. Not as almost good as Grease, Jaws and Alien but getting there. All these films contain unbelievable plots, totally unbelievable characters and completely idiotic story lines yet they are compelling (actually, perhaps Alien should be taken out of the list- it is good!).

The other thing about SATC is that it has been done by just about the only nation able to produce this kind of mind numbing, banal, yet utterly watchable drivel - the Americans.(think Dallas!)

Imagine Carrie with a Sloane accent? Does not work! From the sound of it, the film reminds me, though don't ask me why, of Desperate Housewives. I am addicted to this series, yet the characters are totally unreal, living totally unreal lives surrounded by totally unreal characters and rubbish story lines. Yet, addictive is what it is.

I am pleased to say I did not watch SATC series and I will for ever be proud of that, but at the same time, I shall probably go see the film and yes, if they made Desperate Housewives into a film I would probably go see it too.
