I love the entire "Low Country" of South Carolina and Georgia! As a young single, I spent many a happy hour visiting museums, shops, beaches and bars in Beaufort and Savannah. Hilton Head had not been on my short list until my sister-in-law asked if we wanted to use their timeshare in July. With nary a vacation in sight, Rob, my husband, and I jumped at her offer.
So, we packed up on a Friday, and actually (miraculously!) left early Saturday!
Sunday morning brought beach time for me; golf for Rob. (The island is a veritable cornucopia of golf courses!) Later, Rob rented bikes - he has balance, I am a GIANT klutz! So, after exchanging my two-wheels for an adult tricycle, I was appalled to discover I couldn't ride without tipping over. It was simply ridiculous. Finally, I decided to walk everywhere.
The island is beautiful, interesting and was a rural enclave for many of the "Gullah" people. Interested in history, we toured Daufuskie Island, (Gullah' for The First Key'), a gem that lies between Hilton Head and Tybee Island, Georgia. This was where Pat Conroy taught school and set his book "The Water is Wide." We also visited an old church, the Daufuskie Pottery, and chatted up a nearby pod of dolphin.
A sea kayak tour of the marshy grasses surrounding the island that included an ecology lesson was another highlight.
For July 4th, we took in a truly magnificent fireworks display as we sat on our balcony feasting on scrumptious "Piggly Wiggly" fare.
For off-the-beaten track dining, lip-smacking meals can be had at "Street Meets" and the "Sea Shack" on Hilton Head.
Savannah is a MUST-SEE! St.Patrick's Day is big there, but green beer notwithstanding, Savannah is a delight! We took a carriage ride, toured homes, loved its' mystery and shopping. (Savannah College of Art and Design boasts a terrific gift shop!) Savannah has famous restaurants, but we had a delightful meal at the "Firefly Caf," a neighborhood eatery.
We had a magical visit! I'd go back anytime!
