I would like to say that no Father's Day gift that you give could be a bad one, as the well-known, and probably overly used saying goes, "It's the thought that counts" but I guess there are only so many ties, pairs of socks and bottles of cheap aftershave that one man can own. On the other hand there are definitely certain presents that you should avoid at all costs. The last thing you want to see is that fixated grin and hear the sarcastic words of "Oh! Thank you! It's what I've always wanted!"
*Toilet humor gadgets - a windup toy of a man pulling his pants down might be funny to some, but it is not exactly the ideal present for your father. Slippers and underwear that make rude noises whenever you move will only make you laugh, and only for so long. The chances are that they will not get worn. If you have to get a gadget or a toy, make it one that you know will get used on a regular basis.
*Garish clothes - loud ties, patriotic underwear, Hawaiian shirts, humorous socks... nobody wears these seriously or because they actually want to do they? They are worn for charity events or to say "Look! I am wearing it!" so that the giver doesn't become offended and upset. Buy a smart work shirt instead, one that your Dad is likely to wear and not one that you think is hilarious.
*Flowers and chocolates - these are more feminine presents and more suited towards Mother's Day rather than Father's Day. Unless your Dad knows the difference between a rose and a carnation it is probably best to avoid these. A bottle of his favorite alcohol is much likely to be appreciated more!
*Old Spice - it's predictable and very 80's. Retro might be coming into fashion nowadays, but nobody really wants to smell like a musty old man. There are several new fragrances on the market that have a fresh up-beat scent that you can choose from. You don't have to spend a fortune on designer labels, but do test it and ask for a second opinion before making a final decision.
If you do decide to go for a gift listed above do not be surprised if they get shoved in a box or to the back of a cupboard never to see the light of day again. It may be an idea to ask your Dad if there is anything he would actually like, or if there is anything you shouldn't bother with. If you don't want to ruin the surprise, ask your Mum, or your Dad's partner for some advice and remember, you can never go wrong with vouchers. After all, "It is the thought that counts".
