These training tools' cause more problems than they fix. While I do not technically support the complete removal of either item, their use needs to be limited to professionals and those people who can show they know the correct manner of use. When used as fine-tuning a pinch/prong collar or choke chain can be very useful because of their ability to convey a message with very little effort. In the hands of an ignorant or irresponsible handler they are a menace to canine welfare.

Prong Collars, also known as pinch collars, were designed to tighten down while applying even pressure around the dog's neck. When fitted and used correctly very little harm occurs. The problem is the fact that they are available for sale in most pet supply stores. This means that they are readily available to people who do not feel that they need to research training techniques or seek professional help which in the long run increases the possibilities for injury, fatality and an increase in behavior problems.

Choke Chains, or slip chains as they are known in some circles, were designed on a similar principle with the exception of even pressure. A choke chain used incorrectly can and will kill a dog. In this aspect, prong collars are actually preferable because their design doesn't allow them to tighten down completely as long as they are fitted half-way correctly. Choke chains do have some use in fine tuning as well as providing quick correction though their use should be considered a last resort.

I often see people investing in one of these two collars to deal with their aggressive or large breed dog. The problem with the theory behind it is the fact that any time an aggressive behavior is met with aggression there is only one outcome. Increased aggression. There are no breeds of dog more in need of a pinch or choke collar than any other breed. The decision to implement either of these tools needs to be based on experience, a solid bond and professional guidance.

I believe that by limiting access to these potentially harmful tools, which are very easy to abuse, we can make the world a better place for canines every where. Of course this isn't likely to happen any time soon so I have compiled a short list of sites which will help readers choose whether a choke chain or pinch collar is necessary as well as give accurate information on the proper method of use for each.

* Note: I do not support Mr. Frawley and in fact find many of his theories horrifying. However he does explain the fitting and use of a Prong/Pinch collar very well which is why the link is here. Please do not judge me based on the content of his site.
