Colonial Williamsburg - Travel to the past, to a historical place and time. Venture into the same taverns as George Washington, Patrick Henry, and Thomas Jefferson. Walk the streets that they walked or take a carriage ride through the town as if you were royalty yourself.
Whether you live close by Williamsburg, Virginia or far away, this is a great place to vacation! My Husband and I just spent our five year anniversary in Colonial Williamsburg. We stayed at the Woodlands Hotel just behind the Visitor Center and were able to take a shuttle to and from the Historic Area. The treatment we received was impeccable. We were there for three days and two nights and still had not seen everything we wanted to see.
The lodging options range from very economical to the most extravagant-fit for a queen (The Queen herself!) Yes, Queen Elizabeth visited there in May of 2007 to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the settlement. Not only is the lodging fit for a queen, but so is the dining. We opted for the more luxurious dinner at the King's Arms Tavern on the Duke of Gloucester Street for our anniversary. The servers are in costume, the menu is traditional cuisine from the 1700's and the ambiance is simply wonderful. We were presented with complementary traditional appetizers to choose from and, because it was our anniversary, we received two complimentary glasses of champagne. The food was absolutely delicious and unlike anything we had experienced before. There was also entertainment to include a story teller and a music ensemble of a fiddler player and guitarist. The King's Arms Tavern is a definite must for the couple who visits Colonial Williamsburg. Although there were families dining there with children, I would suggest that the King's Arms Tavern be reserved for a nice romantic dinner for two and the entire family can experience colonial dining at it's best for a more reasonable price at one of the other local taverns.
Also in Colonial Williamsburg are many plays and re-enactments to experience, in addition to the tours offered of the local historical sites. We purchased tickets for the "Cry Witch" program offered in the Capitol Building. Another opportunity to travel back in time, we participated in the trial of a Princess Anne County woman by the name of Grace Sherwood, who had been accused of witchery. The play was perfectly re-enacted from the costumes to the Old English spoken by the Governor himself. There are many other events, plays and re-enactments that take place throughout the day, everyday, in Colonial Williamsburg. Upon your arrival, you will receive a map, which on the reverse side, has a weekly schedule of the events.
For those of the family not interested or as excited about being able to travel back in time, Colonial Williamsburg also offers spa treatments, premier golfing and quality shopping. However, if you think Colonial Williamsburg is like every other historic battle ground or site, think again. I promise you will be amazed!
For more information call or visit the website of the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center. We made all of our reservations through them and were very pleased with the quality of service we received. They will send you a packet of information prior to your arrival so that you can begin planning your itinerary for your upcoming vacation!
