What it means to be Muslim

by Hasan Goreja

Created on: June 03, 2008

Although it wasn't quite late in the evening even then it was intensely dark outside. Perhaps it was because it poured down really heavily in the noon. The clouds were still out there as if trying to quench the thirst of our Mother Earth once and for all. It was still raining but the rain was no more in the form of drops. It seemed like the clouds were spurting the leftovers of the water they had. These conditions are termed to be most congenial for nourishing the thoughts which are born in the corners of our minds but can never make it to the fore front because of the 'tensions' which we face daily.

I went outside to get the most out of such a generosity by the Almighty and to cultivate such useful thoughts which remain somewhere under the gray matter. Suddenly a thought struck me (read:divine notion) that 'Why are we sent here?' i mean there must be a purpose behind our creation. Everything in this universe has been created with some useful purpose. Even a specie which seems to be useless does have a purpose but the question remains............What is the purpose of our creation?
I started talking to myself without even knowing that i was walking outside on the street. Initially there came two major reasons but both of them seemed poles apart. I saw different shopkeepers busy selling their products which gave me the idea of money making and surviving in the society. Obviously without money, it's impossible to even survive, what to talk of excelling and progressing. "So this is the sole purpose of our creation", I thought. I had found the answer. After all, our Prophets also had some sort of mean to feed themselves and their families. This is why mostly we remain busy throughout our lives to make a good career and earn 'a handsome sum'.
Happiness of solving such a mystery sort of overwhelmed me but it was short lived. I was busy congratulating myself over my success that suddenly the loud speaker of a nearby mosque was turned on. Moazzan started calling people for the Asr prayers. His voice acted as a hammer which sent my success shattering down. If we are meant to make money, then what is the part played by the prayers? (and by prayers i mean Namaz, fasting, giving alms and Hajj). If only praying is our only purpose to live, why is everybody striving in life in their respective domains? Businessmen want their businesses expanded and their sales soaring high, a student want his score to be outstanding so that his placement in a well reputed organisation gets
