How to improve your self-confidence
Over the weekend everywhere I went I heard someone talking about self-confidence. Coaches were telling kids, bosses telling employees. Then I see this article on the web. It started me thinking. What's the truth about self-confidence? I realized something extremely profound and before I give you the easiest tool and only tool you'll ever need to improve your self-confidence I think it's important to define self-confidence.
Merriam's Webster's defines it as "confidence in oneself and in one's powers and abilities".
Dictionary.com defines it as "realistic confidence in one's own judgment, ability, power, etc, and freedom from doubt; belief in yourself and your abilities."
The first question you have to ask yourself is "Do I believe I have to learn how to be self-confident?" My guess is most of you will say, "Yes." My goal is to show you that you were born with self-confidence. At some point you decided to stop using it. Therefore, there is nothing to learn.
The two areas of self-confidence can be explained by asking yourself if you have to gain self-confidence or is it something you already have. The first area which is where most people operate. They think self-confidence is something you have to gain or learn. Most of this thinking is applied in order to accomplish a new goal. The goal can be anything from applying or finding a new job, making a sales call, asking a girl out on a date, asking for a raise, trying a new sport. The list is endless.
The thought is that you have to gain self-confidence before you can achieve these goals.
The second area of self-confidence is where reality exists. This is the area which we operate in most of our daily lives. You have a continuous state of self-confidence. You are self-confident in everything that you do. Take the following examples. Do you drive a car? For most of us, the answer is "yes". It takes a tremendous amount of self-confidence to get behind the wheel of a 2000+ pound piece of metal and propel it forward at 50 mph in the midst of 1000's of others vehicles in a confined area.
How about turning in assignments or speaking with customers at work? Both of those take self-confidence. Yet you do these every day. There are countless activities you can list that you do each and every day. Each only happens because you must be self-confident before you attempt it. The difference between the two areas is our focus. In
