As the sun seems to be getting stronger every year it is more imperative to protect children from sunburn and skin damage starting in the early years.

The rise of skin cancers has prompted a more aggressive stance by medical researchers for the skin protection of kids. "Experts estimate that the significant percentage of life long exposure to sun occurs by 18 years of age".

Babies 6 Months or Younger:

Babies of this age should be kept out of the sunlight entirely, since their skin is very thin, and has not had the opportunity to fully develop the melanin needed to protect against sun damage. Applying baby oil does nothing to protect against sun damage, and actually helps the skin to burn. Older children should not stay out in the sun from April to September for extended periods of time.

Sun Screen for Kids up to 3 Year of Age:

A sun tan is a sign the body had received too much sun so if your children are tanned, they have already been exposed to sun damage. Youngsters should be transported in buggies or trams in the sun with a sun shade over the buggy.
At the age of 3 to 6 year of age a child's skin and scalp are still too thin and sensitivity to the sun can produce burning damage.

Sun Screens with SPF ratings have chemicals which are absorbed into the skin.
This type needs application hour before going outside, and should be re-applied after swimming or sweating activity. SPF ratings are best at 15 or more, not above SPF 30, an adult sunscreens are no different that children's brands.

Chemical Free Sunscreens:

Today chemical free sunscreens containing zinc oxide or Titanium dioxide that form a barrier on top of the skin instead of getting absorbed. PAPA sunscreens now are a source of skin irritation so chose " PAPA Free" sunscreens.

Keep Your Babies Protected in Other Ways:

Baseball hats may be cute but offer very little protection for the scalp and neck area. A more wide brimmed hat at the front and flap at the back protects both the face and neck. Your baby should be used to wearing a hat outdoors to keep them cooler and protected from sun damage.

Clothing for kids between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., of all ages is essential for sun protection even in the water. Cotton clothing in light colors offers the best protection although some Lycra mixed fabrics are supposed to offer protection also.

Sunglasses for the eyes must be shielded from the sun's rays and children should wear sunglasses that block out the damaging UVA and UVB rays by 100 percent. The cheaper
