Poetry: Drug addiction

Co-Dependence

Beer and vodka and rum and wine
my husband drinks alcohol all the time.
He drowns his sorrow and his shame
and submerges me in anguish and pain.
He passes out when he's done.
I envy his escape because I have none.
I care for the kids, the pets, the house.
He's too far gone to help methe louse!
Confrontation never offers relief;
Just like always, I'm left with grief.

Why do I honor marital ties
to this man who always lies?
Livin' this way is insane!
Isn't the choice plain?
Take the kids and leave his sorry ass.
Stop living in such a dark morass.
Let go of the anxiety and the disgrace.
Create a new life in a new place.
Find the courage to follow-through...
Just like always, he says, "I love you."

Argh! His promises he can't keep.
I have too many reasons to weep.
When liquor stops giving him hope,
he finds solace in the damned dope.
Oh, how he apologizes and begs.
This time he won't go back to the dregs.
Yeah. Sure. I'll give him another chance.
Inevitably, my heart he'll lance
with the double sword of alcohol and weed.
Just like always, to his addiction I concede.
