Quick trip tips: Hilton Head, South Carolina for a 3-day getaway

Hilton Hedonism

The stunningly picturesque South Carolina coastline reminds me of those sunny travel agent window displays; the permanent sun, sand and scenery that you always dream of when you book a holiday but rarely find. Hilton Head island has to be the most awe inspiring natural beauties of the bunch that will leave a smile on your face no matter what your idea of a perfect getaway weekend.

With a history dating as far back as 15,000 years and a huge range of water sports and land based activities on offer, it would be impossible to produce an itinerary to suit everyone. That said, it would also be difficult to come up with an itinerary that didn't prove that Hilton is the destination of choice for your next short break.

Waking up to a view stretching to the horizon, the sparkling sea gleams back up at the waterfront seductively. This small, flat island is ideal for cyclists so I highly recommend hiring for the weekend from someone like Pelican Cruiser, relatively cheaply. This will allow you to enjoy the most of what is on offer whilst keeping up the locals' ethos of clean living and environmental awareness.

The brave can head straight for the sea and use their early holiday energy to try out water-skiing, jet-skiing, sailing or any number of exciting water sports. Those looking to find tranquility and unwind can leave adventurous partners and kids behind at the beach and slink into the award winning FACES Day Spa for some well deserved pampering.

Meet up for lunch at any number of fantastic restaurants or bistros, although my favorite has to be the no frills seafood of Sea Shack. Their daily menu changes depending on the seafood that they catch and it is always fresh and well priced.

If your partner plays golf and you don't, prepare some activities to take part in separately! Long known as a golfer's paradise, Hilton Head boasts some of the best fairways in the US and, combined with the fantastic surroundings, should be taken advantage of. Despite this, should you be under strict orders to leave the clubs at home, you will have plenty to help you forget about your handicap!

Saturday afternoon seems the perfect moment to head slightly north to the Island Winery. Aim to get there for around 2pm to make the most of a free tour and sample some of South Carolina's home made wines for a lovely way to ease yourself into the evening.

At night, the numerous clubs and bars of Hilton Head light up and open their doors around what is known as the 'Barmuda Triangle'. Some are more suited to the 30-somethings whilst Hypnotyk caters for those between 18 and 30 years old. There are also a number of theatrical and musical performances throughout the year for those who feel their clubbing days are over!

With an array of historical sites and areas of natural beauty to skip round, three days is well spent on Hilton Head Island. Whether you're wanting to leave the world behind and rest or sample new activities, you won't leave disappointed.
