Dating Dilemmas

The challenges of dating a single parent

One thing about dating a single parent is that there are other factors to mind than just the person. Their kids are most likely going to be their first priority. Depending on how many kids they have and their age groups, you want to analyze yourself on how you deal with kids. Do you like them? Are you patient and understanding when it comes to them telling you their problems?

A parent might seem uncomfortable going back to dating if they haven't been dating for a while. You want to be patient with them and give them time to come out of their shell. The longer they haven't been dating causes for the more time they need to come out.
Most parents are worried about whether their kids can adjust to their parent getting back into the dating game. Some kids think that if their parent starts dating, someone will come in and take over. Some kids like their lives the way it is and don't want a new addition to their family. You have to go in with compassion. You want to get on their good side but don't be a suck up. As long as you're being real and let them know that you're not trying to take over, it becomes much easier for them to adjust.
There is always that other parent. You don't want to get in and mess up the flow. If your date and the "other parent" are having issues, step back and let them handle it on their own. It's important that you try not to get involved because it shows that part of you trying to take over and that's not the side you want to show.
Be sure that as you're dating, that you don't treat it like a single relationship. Don't try to steal all the time you can with him or her. Remember that time they used before you used to be family time. Leave them some time for family and some time alone. Family outings makes stronger ties with kids and scores you brownie points with your lover. It shows that you like the kids and you aren't in it just for your lover but all of the necessary baggage that goes along with them. Don't be selfish, there's more than one person involved.
Trying to start a relationship with a single parent can be very hard. But it is possible. There may be certain precautions you have to take but if you think it's worth it to be with that person, you would do anything. Your goal is to put your heart in the right place and to remind yourself that you're dealing with a sticky situation. Be sensitive and true, you might just make it happen. Good luck with fight for your goal.
