Movie reviews: Sex and the City

Huge fans of the hit HBO show will more than likely clamor to see this film. The opening weekend revealed that not only do single women flock to films such as these, but men of varying ages too! This movie has been panned by critics as not being the most exciting silver screen run of a TV-show based film. But there are some definite highlights. Those who enjoy fashion will be served up several big fat juicy doses of couture in this popular flick. Samantha, Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte drape themselves in every label known to man. In fact, it is said that the Sex & the City movie has the most expensive wardrobe in film history to date. Even the dogs in this film are donning couture doggie-wear

As for the story, expect things to pick up right where they left off in the film. The opening credits do a wonderful job of filling in those who might need a quick refresher on what's been going on with the ladies. By the time you get into the nitty gritty of the film, you feel as if you've watched at least 5 more additional episodes. Like the show, expect things to revolve around the one and only Ms. Carrie Bradshaw. At the end of Season 6, she and Mr. Big had decided that they belong together. The movie is focused on her and Mr. Big's upcoming nuptials. While the show found these two floundering back and forth in their romance, this time around we see that Carrie and Mr. Big have decided to take the formal plunge. The storyline focuses on their wedding, but also does a fantastic job of incorporating the other plot points as well. Be prepared, however for Charlotte's storyline to be the "least interesting" as she is the only one in the movie who isn't undergoing some major life trauma. In fact, a portion of the movie focuses on the fact that she and her family are quite happy.

Samantha provides the necessary comic relief that Sex & the City fans have grown so accustomed to. And while Miranda and her typical cynicism were a welcomed addition, the storyline surrounding her marriage (and her friendship to Carrie) left the film feeling heavy in spots. Jennifer Hudson's role, however minimal it seemed, wasn't exactly the BOOM-POW performance that audiences might be expecting. But as a semi-supporting role, she does well at keeping things authentic, while serving as the only black member of the cast. Again, if you loved the series, this is the one film that you probably won't want to miss in 2008.
