When we decided to visit Hilton Head for a weekend getaway, we knew it won't be an easy choice to make between the many beautiful resort areas, the variety of great accommodations available and the wonderful activities We decided on a resort that was central to all the fun activities we planned to enjoy during our visit. Access to Golf was a must as was spending some lazy days on the beach, taking long walks, shopping and easy commuting.
We found all this and more in Palmetto Dunes, one of the popular resorts in Hilton Head which is located in the center of the Island. This eighteen hundred acre resort, was voted one of the top 50 mainland resorts by the readers of Conde'Nast's Traveller. It is easy to see why. With thousands of repeat visitors and thousands of miles of uncrowded beaches, it is a major draw for tourist to the islands from all walks of life. Our one bedroom suite had a gorgeous view of ocean with numerous amenities including shared hot tub and pool, TV, DVD and stereo.
With three 18 hole championship golf courses nearby, we were able to indulge in a game or two of golf in the most breathtakingly beautiful scenery. Palmetto Dunes as well as other resorts in Hilton Head, boasts many miles of landscaped, lined paths for jogging, walking or bicycling. Take a canoe, paddle boat or kayak ride in the 11 miles of man made lagoons located there and get to see some incredible wildlife along the way. It is truly an amazing ride.
If participating in all these activities makes you hungry, there are over a dozen places to eat in Palmetto Dunes and many more in the rest of Hilton Head. Seafood lovers may want to try the Three Diamond award winning Alexander's restaurant, or Caf at the Marriott, for casual dining and buffets.
The resort's general store also carry many other items you will need, like souvenirs, lotions, beach items and a deli. The resort is known for its golf shop that carries exclusive golf wear like Tiger Woods and Burberry golf items. There is also the Tennis Center Pro shop where you would find a wide variety of clothing and accessories. But if you crave more, set aside one day and take the Dunes Buggy to Shelter Cove where you will be amazed at the many great shops there. From the fish market to the Nash Gallery showcasing some fabulous creations in wood, glass and ceramics, there is something unique for every taste.
Take a visit to the stunning Art Center located in Hilton Head and enjoy one of their great shows, cultural festivals and performances. If you visit between June 5th and August 21st, you won't want to miss the lively night time entertainment at Shelter Cove Harbor. The whole family will love the food, crafts, entertainment and fireworks. The best part - it is free.
How do you get around to enjoy all the great things Palmetto Dunes has to offer? With the Palmetto Dunes Buggy of course. The colorful buggy, provides complimentary rides to visitors between Palmetto Dunes and Shelter Cove Harbor. However, it operates on a a first come first serve basis and you need to schedule a pick up. Depending on where the buggy is when you call, expect an average 10 minute wait.
We easily were able to fit in a golf game, an afternoon tennis game, shopping in Shelter Cove, an early morning walk, a visit to the Arts Center, a lagoon canoe ride and a visit to Harborfest in three days. It you plan your trip, pre-select and prioritize the activities you are interested in, you will be surprised at how much fun you can pack into a few days.
