Quick trip tips: Orlando, Florida for a 3-day getaway

Looking for a quick Orlando adventure on a short time span? Look no further! Having lived fully entrenched in the Land of the Mouse for four years, I learned a few things about what to expect and how to make the most of your time while you're there.

Universal Studios has some excellent new attractions that shouldn't be missed. The Simpsons ride opened recently and Harry Potter "land" is slated for Fall of this year. There is fun for the whole family from the itty bitties to the older crowds that want to pop into the many themed bars for a drink after a long day in the sun. Universal is split into two parks Islands of Adventure (more roller-coasters but also has a children's friendly area) and Universal Studios Florida (the original with themed rides such as Men in Black, Revenge of the Mummy and Shrek 4D as well as the new Simpsons ride). Joining the studios is what is called City Walk an area filled with restaurants such as Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville, Emeril's Restaurant Orlando (try to make reservations!), NBA City and HardRock Caf to name a few. If you are a Florida resident, you can get a discount off of admission most days. Check into other available discounts through places like AAA.

If you are thinking the Disney route, I highly suggest you take advantage of cutting through the lines with either FastPass or get in the Single Rider Line. Either of these options will allow you to get through the parks quicker, or if it's peak season, allow you to see the entire park without running out of time. While the Single Rider line says it will split up most parties, I have experienced numerous times when I was sat with several people I went with. FastPass allows you to schedule a reservation for a ride later on. Instead of waiting in the long line, you schedule a later time (it selects it for you) and then you come back during your designated time and zoom to the front of the line.

In the evening at Disney, you can head to Disney's Boardwalk or Downtown Disney. Both offer delicious restaurants and other places to putz around and just people watch and play games. If you're a Lego-lover, be sure to check out the wonderful display of creations outside the Lego store in Downtown Disney.

Overall, I suggest pre-selecting 2 parks you want to see and then filling in your "leftover" time at the end of the day with some of the amazing restaurants or walking around CityWalk, the Boardwalk or Downtown Disney in the evenings. But whatever your plans, make sure you purchase your tickets through a reputable source such as AAA or at the park/event. NEVER purchase from the kiosks that pededle "deep discounts" - sometimes these tickets are fakes! Enjoy!
