Bedroom decor: How to design a Disney princess theme bedroom

by Rob Lamb

Decorating a child's bedroom can be made into an involved project or an easy one. Something to keep in mind is that children grow and their tastes change. Smart planning is essential with either route. The first step should be considering how permanent the new decor will need to be and how much work you want to do. Also consider your strong and weak points in remodeling to help guide you through the process.

Themed bedrooms offer a child a small world of their own to be comfortable in and stimulate imagination. For many girls a princess themed room is a dream come true. Disney is in the forefront when it comes to a variety of princesses and female characters to build around. And materials are available for every aspect of a room from wall coverings and accents to bedding and furniture. While there is a plethora of products to choose from this does not necessarily mean you`ll have to spend a fortune to complete the room with every available facet. Simple common colors throughout a room will make the design cohesive just as much and often better than buying everything to match exactly.

Pick colors and themes that conform to your design ideas. These will be utilized throughout the project from paint and wallpaper colors to comforters and decorations. After assessing any structural modifications to an existing room the first task should be to address walls and floor. Once colors are chosen then you can begin acquiring the supplies you`ll need to get started. If you plan to replace carpets or other flooring it`s a good idea to do any painting first. This way you can avoid any damage that may occur during the process.

To paint or to paper? Both have advantages and disadvantages. If you are doing the work yourself one factor to consider is if you are more comfortable doing one or the other. Wall paper comes in many themes and can be applied relatively easily. Some drawbacks are that if you later want to remove the paper it can involve more work than a re-coat of paint and often the walls underneath need some rehabilitation if you do not plan to put up new wallpaper but paint instead. On the other hand painting for some can be a messy and less than perfect process. As in all things proper techniques and tools make any job go much smoother. But even when going the wallpaper route it`s often a good idea to give the trim in the room a coat of paint to either match your theme or simply freshen them up.

A nice option for painted walls are stickers. There are many styles to choose from that come in non adhesive form so they can be moved or removed at a later time. This also allows you to go back and change a theme out if you so desire without much hassle. Check stores for options regarding these items. They are inexpensive and an easy way to add a theme to either an existing room or one that is being totally redone.

Once you have the walls, ceiling and flooring addressed you can begin to focus on furniture, draperies and bedding. Some items you already have may work fine with your plan. Others will have to be replaced or reworked. Painting or refinishing a dresser or bedside table is an inexpensive way to refresh the piece and make it work in the new room. As with all bedroom furniture you can opt to buy premade themed pieces or simply match colors. Depending on your budget decide your best course of action.

Space is also an issue. In a large room a canopy bed or poster bed can be a wonderful fit. But in a small room trundle beds are a great way to maximize space as they provide storage underneath for clothes or toys. Also some bunk bed designs help space issues by elevating the bed and leaving room underneath for storage or a desk for a work and play area. This can make up for a lack of room for dressers and desks or having a closet that is too small. Other furniture can also be added such as hampers, tables, lamps and shelving. Some may be easy to find themed and others may not. Once again this is a case where following the chosen color scheme and properly assessing your needs can make the going easier.

The same guidelines apply to draperies and bedding. Many themed items are available from a variety of merchants and leave no question as to what they are. One area that does benefit from the themed store bought items is the bedding. A simple comforter really makes the bed become part of the whole room. And normally being the largest item in the room having the bed themed goes a long way toward achieving a nice finished look.

From walls and floor to bed an beyond creating a princess themed room of your child's dreams is only as involved as you make it. Fortunately there are many options out there to help us achieve our goal. Leaving a smile on your face almost as big as the child's is sure to be.
