America's dependency on standardized tests

by CJ

I have one question? Has America today become way too dependent on the scores

of tests, to prove if their child is learning well in school and whether they pass

the course. Can one test really prove how much you know. Children have so many

different learning techniques, and everyone doesn't do well on tests. Test bring

alot of pressure, and we sometimes get them on bad days. Let's not also forget the

fact, that some people guess and still pass.

I know that in the state of North Carolina, the current 9th graders are now

faced with the issue of passing the test or failing the course for the official End

of Course Exams for classes such as US History, Algebra 1, and English 1. I really

don't believe that one year will determine this. When I was in 9th grade, our EOC

scores did have a big effect on our final grade, but it wasn't the total

determination of what we know. Everytime, a big percentage of students succeed on

the test, they contiously, change the tests. They spend all their time on these

tests and don't even take the time to think of other places that the money could be

used for poor schools to fund them with the use of more books and supplies that

they are surely lacking of. I think that yes, we do need a test to see how well the

student is doing, but should we let that be the determining factor of if we pass or

fail.
