"27 Dresses" - Doesn't Do It
Ok, so it's the latest "big blockbuster" and "romantic comedy" to hit the shelves at the video store - out just in time for "Mother's Day" (nice marketing move by the way) but I have to be honest, romantic comedies aren't normally on the top of my "Must Rent This DVD" list.
In fact, the last film of this kind that I really liked was "Pretty Woman". I don't know why but something about Julia Roberts laugh, that fired off like a magnum shotgun made me smile and she charmed the hell out of me.
"27 Dresses" features the newly crowned Hollywood sweetheart Kathrin Heigl, hot off the cinema hit "Knocked-Up", who some will also recognize from the TV hit drama "Grey's Anatomy".
And sadly for me, it features Canadian actor James Marsden who was in my 12th grade class at school. (Errrr. Not him again!)
Now I have to sit through another 90 minutes of a movie featuring a guy I had a secret crush on at 18 years old who paid about as much attention to me as he did to the dust on the floor.
First I had to watch him play Cyclops in the "X-men" series and now he is back to remind me, yet again of my horrible school memories. Thanks Jamie!
But enough about me. Back to the review.
"27 dresses" follows the little tale of Heigls character "Jane" through her life as "always the Bridesmaid, never the Bride" and the 27 weddings she has been planning the details of for all of her friends, also known as "Bridezillas".
Then to make matters worse her younger sister is now engaged to marry her boss. The boss she believes she is in love with by the way. And she is now left as the suffering bridesmaid yet again.
I will admit there are two highlights in this film.
The first is her fashion show of the 27 dresses she has been forced to wear at all the weddings - and there is nothing more charming than a person that can go from very awkward to very sexy all so effortlessly.
This is what I kind of like about actress Kathrin Heigl. She does a great job at showing her frustration and horror with this great expression.
Even in her little breakdowns you can't help but smile a little because of her comedic timing that is swirled within all her "drama".
And I must confess, I could surely identify with the role of "Jane" as I seem to find myself as "never the guest, always the planner". It would seem my career in Public Relations and my multi-tasking abilities has landed me as head ring leader at more events, meetings, openings, weddings, birthdays and parties then I care to think about.
