Commentary: Drugs among teens and young adults

There are few things more annoying to me than "The reformed pop star" pontificating to the nation's youth about how he has been to the edge of the abyss, due to his out of control habit of ingesting huge amounts of whatever his particular drug was. And then unsolicited offering words of advice to the aforementioned impressionable youth about leaving drugs alone. The fact that I am now going to write an article with a similar agenda is tantamount to hypocrisy, but with a marked difference in my viewpoint. In nineteen eighty eight I took my first MDMA or Ecstasy tablet. And it's effect was without doubt the most wonderful feeling that I had gotten from any chemical up to that point.I was no stranger to chemicals, Having taken drugs since nineteen eighty four when someone gave me my first wrap of Amphetamine Sulphate which of course was fantastic; made me talk at a million miles an hour. And made the first time I ever heard "Wake me up before you go-go" one of the stand out moments of my young life, sounding like the greatest musical ditty ever written. A sure sign of the drug's efficacy and it's mind altering effect on me. Over the next twenty odd years up to and including the present time I have actively pursued the buying of Ecstasy with varying degrees of success. Searching for that same high I experienced during those halcyon days of Acid House and the appearance of "The loved up generation. The sight of once mortal enemies from the football terraces no longer fighting but instead finding, albeit, temporary empathy and friendship is one memory that I will take to my grave. My bone of contention is that whereas the active ingredients of Ecstasy twenty years ago was universally one hundred per cent MDMA at a price of twenty pounds per tablet, nowadays you cannot get tablets that contain any MDMA at all. They all are sold as MDMA but in fact contain derivatives of other substances from the same family, chemical chains, such as MDEA or Amphetamines quite possibly using bonding agents such as rat poison or brick dust. Whilst in real terms the tablets are much cheaper now, they are junk and more likely to not only prove to be a waste of money but could render the person swallowing them; in the false hope of him or her having a good time, very unwell indeed and possibly even a candidate for an early death. So I would suggest that at least until such time as the Laboratories throughout Europe get their acts together and start once again to actually use the correct ingredients in their disco biscuits, I would leave well alone.
