Poetry: Death of a loved one

by Matthew Sharpe

Created on: May 31, 2008

Lights shine off in the distance
Nothing but blackness appears
There is resistance
Death whispers in my ear

He talks of a life he just took
And smiles at me
He wants me to look
I cannot, I do not want to see

He tells me I know this person well
It becomes cold
But he still will not tell
It was someone I used to hold

I begged him to stop the pain
Cupping my head in my hands
Death speaks about her being slain
I cannot stand

All but one light in the distance is burning bright
Death once again grins and disappears
Darkness pushes in, making the light take flight
I feel nothing but fear

I pray for that one light to stay
To keep alive
It flickers and starts to sway
So I can survive

The light then goes out
My happy memories of us keep receding
Into the darkness I shout
This is the day my heart stopped beating
