I'm not always sure on how one decides on the best of something but when I saw the question I knew in my heart what it would be.
Several years ago I had a small dog named Honeygirl, she was just so special to me, I really almost don't know how to share it with others. She and I were inseparable, everywhere I went she would go with me. I took her to the shopping center, to the hair dresser's , the ice cream shop and yes even to the doctor's office. She was so small she fit right inside my jacket. She was a very well behaved dog, always friendly and out going to all who stopped to pet her.
Honeygirl was getting old, she was almost seventeen years old, only I didn't want to face the fact of her age. Honeygirl and I were sitting on the back poach one evening, it was just getting dark and the wind started to blow. I started into the house to shut some windows and noticed that Honeygirt wasn't behind me. I called to her, she picked up her head but didn't move. I called to her again, whenever I called she always came right to me. I knew in my heart that something was wrong. I went to her and talking to her like a child, I asked what was wrong. She looked at me with those big black eyes and I swear they clouded over with tears. I picked her up as she weighed only seven pounds and went into the house. I laid her on her bed and watched as she tried to move, thinking to myself something is really wrong I called the vet. As I waited for the vet to come by and check on Honeygirl she came to me and laid her head in my lap. By the time the vet stopped by the house Honeygirl was gone, I knew in her way she had said goodbye by using her energy to get into my lap. I was so heart broken, for days I wandered around like a lost soul, hoping she would appear. I knew this wasn't going to really happen as the vet took her for me and did what needed to be done. But losing a close friend is really difficult. My family came by often to see how I was doing and offered to stay but I just wanted to be alone, alone in my own pain. It did get better but not for quite some time. Several years did pass, Honeygirl still in my thoughts but at least I wasn't a moping any longer.
My birthday was coming up at the end of the week and the family was going to celebrate with me. I was busy as a beaver cooking and cleaning when everyone arrived. As we sit around the table it seemed as if everyone was whispering and keeping something from me. I finally said, alright what's up. All of them shaking their heads
