Poetry: Life power

by Gerry Baird

Created on: May 31, 2008

I have seen the aura of power.
It rested comfortably, like a cloak, upon the shoulders of a humble man.
Most people missed it, when they saw him, because it fit him so naturally,
so well.
Yet when he spoke, they listened
When he joked, they laughed
And when he left, they smiled after him.

He cleaned up garbage, for a living.
He kept the toilets in the bathroom spotless.

The titles and wealth that surrounded him meant little to him,
but the people behind them meant much.
And it was from them that he drew
his power,
his poise,
his confidence,
his ease.

He walked a simple walk.
He lived a simple life.
And he taught me that anyone,
in any station of life,
in any circumstance,
can lift others,
and live,
with power,

quietly.
