Lessons in life

It has been my experience that you must reach a certain age (different for us all) before you can really identify and appreciate the real lessons in life. Although, of course, I believe we learn daily in some form or another, the big ones so to speak, usually don't register until you look back in your life. And for me, the quotes, adages, and sayings heard throughout my life have come into play as big lessons. For instance, the adage: "never say never" how true!

All those little quotes handed down really apply as lessons in the big picture. We usually hear them from elders, but when we are young do the elders know anything? I've always said that my favorite, and most useful lesson, my dad taught was "Don't believe anything you hear, and only half of what you see." I've quoted this one since I can remember and even believed I practiced it. Now, at the age of 46, just in the last 5 years have I realized the importance and enormity of this little quote (and many, many more). Even since, they have been hard lessons to truly practice and recognizing the value of them is even harder. And, oh my, there are many!

You have probably guessed that, to me, we can sum up these quotes to the lessons in life we need to learn. Well, I'll have to say "yes"! I'm thinking that the authors of these little wise sayings had certain occurrences over-and-over, to be able to look back and apply the right words to fit each given situation. Situations that we all experience at some point throughout our lives.

Now here are just a very few more of the adages that I'm speaking of:

"Look before you leap."-Samuel Butler
" Tis better to be silent and thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt."-Abraham Lincoln
"Question everything, learn something, answer nothing."-Engineer's Motto
"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."-FDR
"Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood."-Marie Curie
"Love all, trust few, do wrong to none."-Shakespeare
"Its not important what you believe, only that you believe."-Unknown
"Those who stand for nothing, fall for anything."-Alexander Hamilton
"Do not look where you fell, but where you slipped."-Unknown
"Love thrives in the face of all Life's hazards, save one-Neglect."-John Dryden
"He does not believe who does not live according to his belief."-Thomas Fuller
"Opportunity knocks at the strangest times, its not the time that matters, but how you answer the door."-Steve Gray

These quotes are a way for me to appreciate Life's Lessons. I am quite certain that for most any day of our life, we can find one (or two) of these "wise old sayings" to apply somewhere throughout our day. That's when our work begins in utilizing them for the rest of our life.
