How to be happy in everyday life

by K Ong

Being happy to me is an active pursuit of constantly having a positive mindset and being thankful for the little things that I have.

Everytime I get frustrated with my children, I think about how blessed I am to even have them, to get warm hugs and mushy kisses and hear their infectious laughter.

Each time, my parents lecture me (and me a fully grown woman too! Sad isn't it?). I repeat over and over again in my mind that I can still enjoy their presence at festive occasions.

The next time I moan about my weight, I think about how my kids call me and love me as their 'most comfortable pillow' and that I am lucky to have a good apetite and to savour each bite.

Whenever I feel burdened at work, I think about all those who have lost theirs and how my next paycheck will get me and my family a little monthly treat.

Many simple things make me happy: my favourite TV shows, my friends, my books.

After 37 years, I have had my fair share of misery - failures and losses - and there will be more to come, I am sure, because that is LIFE. But I am happy to know that I have grown wiser and stronger over the years and I look forward to every single day because there is always something to be happy about.
