Poetry: Madness

by Mike Finlay

Created on: May 30, 2008

Gently staring at the street
Of people gliding past the shops
In flip-flops, smiling as their feet
Slip floppingly side to side 'flip-flop'.

"Flip-flop, flip-flop" sings in my mind
On long into the weekend's night
It sings and sings, my eyes are blind
No more need to use my sight.

The same cafe draws me in next day
But this time something feels amiss
No smiles or flops sit in my gaze
Just emptiness and that and this
And this and that but nothing new
My eyes are sore my body too
I'm slipping like those feet once flopped
My head is clear and yet so full
I know myself but cannot stop
I cannot stop the push and pull

"Flip-flop, flip flop" I smile inside
But no one comes to ask my why
The walls are close the colours hide
What life to lead as our minds die?

Amongst a crowd of gowned gazing souls
Whose brains are rotting from untold pains
That are quashed by pills in bowls
But safe now - here I will remain
