In order to answer this question truthfully, one must delve into the meaning of the word fantasy. According to the dictionary, fantasy means extravagant and unrestrained imagination, the forming of wondrous or strange fancies (MLA). When you look at the meaning of fantasy, it gives one the impression that fantasy creatures are creatures that are developed through extravagant and unrestrained imagination. When you break it down like this, it isn't difficult to separate fantasy from reality. Are fantasies reality? Are fantasy creatures reality? No. Because this topic covers fantasy creatures, one cannot assume that a creature derived from a fanciful imagination is based on reality.
Reality means something that actually exists and cannot be disproved. At this point, one would be hard-pressed to prove that fantasy creatures such as Pegasus, Minotaur, the Devil, or even God for that matter are actual creatures developed from reality-based occurrences. These myths and stories also fuel the imagination of other writers who indulge us with newer and more imaginative fantasy creatures for years to come. Can these fictional creatures exist in our world today? No. Only in a writer's imagination can these creatures come alive. For those who believe in fantasy creatures, they, too, are just as imaginative as the writers and storytellers of the past. They help to keep fantasy creatures alive through belief and by passing the stories and myths on to future generations.
Reality does not allow for fantasy creatures such as giants with one eye, horses with wings or horns, fire-breathing dragons, or Gods that guide one's love, hate, or daily activity. Sometimes those fantastical myths and stories of creatures skews one's thoughts of what's real and what's
