Essays: Why we write

~Thin blades of grass tickle the arch of my bare foot. The sensual and warm sun toasts my perspiring skin. A cool breeze lifts my thoughts completely from a tired and overworked mind. From a short distance I can hear the roaring of a busy highway but have no intention of acknowledging it. Not today. In front of me, clumsily kneeling, is the joy of my life. Almost 9 months old and growing every day. His thin blond hair splayed from the wind. Chubby baby fingers grasp the beaten and torn Winnie the pooh he has chosen for the time being. He glances back at me with a gummy smile to die for and his ice blue eyes illuminate in the sun. Not a worry in the world, easily content with the tiny ant crawling up the rolls on his legs. His smile is genuine and my heart is at ease. No work, no money, no cleaning or cooking, there is no place in this world I would rather be than in this moment with him.~

This is why I write. To capture the beauty of the world around me. Some people take pictures and they can look back on them any time they want, remembering exactly what they did that day and how they felt. Others use pure memory and love to recall every great or dreadful moment in their life as it comes up in conversation.

But to me, thats not enough. I feel incomplete without the constant company of a page full of spewed thoughts. I want to have every single description, I want to feel, touch, smell and see that moment over and over again in my whole body. I try to find the absolute perfection in my surroundings even if that includes the imperfections that are this world.

Writing is a cleansing process almost for me. It lets me get out whatever poisonous thoughts I may have about the days trials or the build up of beautiful memories I couldn't get on paper quick enough. After yoga, you feel healthy and rejuvenated and energetic and in a way writing does that.

The process of writing can be very vigorous in all aspects. People that write for newspapers and commercials are constantly pushing the pencil for that deadline so they constantly have to edit and critique their work almost as fast as they are creating it. But I am sure at the end of it they can relax for a moment and pride themselves on what they do best. Novel writers spend hour after hour, day after day and months and sometimes years on creating a masterpiece that they hope others will enjoy. It can overtake your life and it becomes you as you create characters and plots whether based on real life of completely fantasized.

The amount of creativity that a writer has to have is phenomenal and goes hand in hand with reading. You must be able to read almost as well as you write, keep your mind open and read everything you can get your hands on. All different genres and authors keep you very knowledgeable and prepared in the writing process. You could almost compare reading and writing to talking and listening. Sometimes you need to be a great listener before you just blurt out what your impulse reaction is. This is true in writing, to be great writer, you should be a great reader.

Writing is capturing the essence of life through your eyes, it is a constant competition within yourself to expand and better your talent and to most it is an addiction. A beautiful one at that!
