There are so many different companies manufacturing MP3 players and PMPsPortable Media Players) such as;such as Samsung, iriver, SanDisk, Creative, Cowon, Archos, Microsoft, and Sony. Therefore I believe it to be quite unfair to just lump them into the "Other MP3 Players" category. The unfairness doesn't end there, everybody goes on to compare the 'Others' with a single product line, the ipod by Apple. Since this is in a category where this is done, and people really aren't thinking much about the injustice, I will compare the qualities of a few different company's and Apple. Oh, and if you do not want my personal opinions you probably should skip the paragraphs outlining the basics of each company, and go straight to the pros and cons of each towards the bottom.
First there is the product line that has a strangle-hold on the often ignorant digital media player market; the ipod. ipods have dominated the market share for most of mp3 player history. The reason they are so widely adopted is because of the genius marketing people at Apple. They are able to churn out a new player yearly(sometimes even more often), that has essentially the exact same features as the previous generation, but can make people drool over the new generation by creating hip, cool, and fancy commercials. America is obsessed with anything flashy and expensive because most are so concerned with image, that anything that is seen as such will be quickly scooped up by the public that are desperate to increase their own self-image, boost their esteem, and make them feel more valuable or of a higher class. That is getting a little to be a little too much for this article so I'll save it for a later debate. However ipods are able to appeal to the general people because of that reason. ipods also have a certain elegance and allure to them with their sleek, minimalist, and clean-cut looks. What the general public does not understand though, is that these ipods are basically boutique products sold at a higher price than others because of a brand name. Truly, one could go out and buy a generic, brand less player for a tenth of the price. Instead, to increase ones self image as said before, people go out and buy the somewhat lame pig that has a nice dress on and some pretty lipstick.
The next company I will discuss is Samsung. They have been gaing ground as of late with their last three generations of players here in America, and could gain much more if marketing was better in America like it
