Water Adventures in Sunriver Oregon
Whether you're into the fast and furious adrenaline rush of white water, a leisurely hike to swim in a local gorge or desire the quiet solitude of casting a fly, Sunriver Oregon offers the best of the Pacific Northwest experience. Sunriver's access to the pristine rivers of Central Oregon is the place to be, flanked by the Eastern shore of the Deschutes River and dense National Forest lands of the Cascades. Flat-bottom water craft are ideal for the Upper Deschutes, kayakers delight! The Lower Deschutes offer the most white water opportunities in addition to healthy steel-head and trout fisheries, while the Middle Deschutes is great for hiking to waterfalls and gorges to swim in.
The warm summer climate and common Class III and IV rapids fuel Sunriver's reputation as an excellent mid-level to experienced White Water Rafting destination. Local outfitters offer a multitude of rafting excursions ranging from day trips, weekenders, and full week family and group rafting experiences. If you feel at home in frothy white water, you have to check out a stretch of river with your buddies and go for it! The right outfitter for weekend and week-long trips will literally provide everything you need, including tents, sleeping bags, and warm meals set up downstream. Paddle in after a long day of fun in the sun and you're set to chill out under the stars. Don't forget your sunscreen and waterproof camera. A great tip for keeping your dry goods dry is to use a wide mouth "Nalgene" style bottle and carabiner clip attached to your boat, both can be found at any outdoor gear shop and prove an invaluable investment when you're inundated with splash over.
Grab your mayflies, dry-flys, & salmonflies and head out to a campsite on the river to snag a steelhead or the regional "redsides" trout. If your interest is in fishing, Sunriver has some great outfitters & shops with artisan quality fly's and knowledge of the renowned local bends that are most likely to offer a hit on your line. "Cascade Guides and Outfitters" provide fishing licenses for both National Forest Lands and BLM Lands, but other locations throughout town and at the local marina will also furnish the necessary permits for anglers. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife indicate the fishing requirements based on species/location and are a great resource for maps to local trails and waterways. Head out to Sunriver this summer and see what the buzz is about. Yes, mosquito repellant is highly recommended for all you sweet blooded summer adventurers.
