It was early October 2006 when I found out I was loosing my job.Tower Records closing meant I was loosing my job of two years. I immediately went into panic mode. I started cutting back on everything. I was washing laundry in my bath tub and only eating one bag of popcorn, it was ridiculous. My biggest worry was food, I could not figure out how to reduce that expense. We all need to eat. Then I remembered my Nana's story of her victory garden. Her mom and she tended so the family could have fresh vegetables during World War Two.
While it's a semi costly expense to start it's well worth it. Although if you can get free seeds or cuttings from a family member that's your best bet. Not only is it free but you'll be able to harvest sooner.
Container gardening was my only option, being a space short New Yorker. My first step was on to the internet. I researched what kind of vegetables could be grown indoors. I made a list and rushed out to the garden supply center. Within weeks I was stress free and living better than I was when I had my job.
Since then my garden has brought me many bountiful harvests of thumb sized eggplants and delicious sugar snap peas. However my garden has brought more than just food, my garden has fed my soul. With my garden I've started eating more veggies. Imagine eating a bowl full of fresh cherry tomatoes, instead of chips. I also spend less on food because I grow my own. Which makes for a happy girl with a slimmer waist and fatter bank account.
