There's nothing like pressing a button, sitting down on your couch, and having an all out war in your living room. Rarely do games so vivid, life-like, and adrenaline producing come around, but Call of Duty 4's online multiplayer hits that perfect sweet spot. With grenades exploding all around you, ringing your ears, bullets whizzing past your head, and air strikes raining death from above, virtual war can be a pretty dangerous place. But don't worry. There are a few things you can do to ensure survival in this hostile environment.
No matter what game mode you prefer, staying alive for as long as possible is priority number one. Call of Duty 4 is unlike many shooters, such as Halo, because of its realistic nature. All too often, a player new to the game can easily be spotted by the way he runs and jumps around the map haphazardly. This is a guaranteed way to cut your life, as well as your enjoyment of the game, short.
Move slowly from cover to cover, stay crouched, watch your corners, and periodically check your six. Just like a real Marine, your job is to stay alive, but running straight into battle with guns blazing isn't the most beneficial way to reach this goal. Always have some sort of cover between you and the enemy. If you feel the need to move, make sure you have a place in mind, that has cover, before you go anywhere. Running out into the open without a plan will surely result in death. When moving from cover to cover, be sure to sprint. There's no greater challenge than trying to hit a quickly moving target.
But staying alive isn't your only goal. You have to get kills as well. What tool you choose to arm yourself with is entirely a matter of preference. Each gun has its own advantages as well as its own limitations. It is up to you to figure out which gun suits you best on each map. Remember, some maps provide close quarter combat (Shipment, Vacant) while others are wide open areas (Creek, Countdown), choose your weapon accordingly.
Grenades, claymores, C4, and RPGs are great allies to have in war. Don't forget to use them. Flash grenades and stun grenades are great for disorienting your enemy before charging in for the kill. Don't forget to use these to your advantage when you have the jump on your enemy. Grenades are perfect for kills in those hard to reach places. Over cover, into second stories, and before clearing a room, grenades can get you far more kills than you think. Remember, grenades have a 4 second fuse, so be sure to cook them enough
