Sunriver is famous for its dry and warm summers and is a magnet for visitors looking for fun in the sun. And where better to spend these hot summer days than at one of the three breathtaking rivers that runs through the region. No wonder that water sports are such a big draw for visitors and residents alike. Whether you choose the McKenzie River, North Umpqua River or the Deschutes River, be prepared for an unforgettable experience.
Whitewater Rafting: Perhaps the most popular whitewater rafting destination in the country, Sunriver has loads of opportunities to wet your appetite, or rather, your body. For beginners and families, try the Deschutes Big Eddy Thriller. This one and a quarter mile 3 hour trip is a great introduction to whitewater rafting. You will be guided through the Deschutes National Forest against a background of tall ponderosa pines, aspens and sightings of river otters. It is interesting to note that the upper Deschutes River was formed by lava from a volcano some 7,000 years ago. Cost is around 44.00 and the tour is run by Sun Country tours.
Canoing: Regardless of your skill level, you will enjoy a relaxing canoe ride on glassy mountain lake waters. Wanderlust tours offer guided tours 2 1/4 hour tours which take you into hidden and tucked away coves and fingers. You could even see some otter and mink on your trip. For the more experienced canoeist, there a rentals available for solo or duo trips.
Fishing: There is no shortage of places to angle here. The Deschutes River runs right through Sunriver and there are also some 15 lakes within an hour of Sunriver. Rent a boat, choose a dock or take a guided tour. If you didn't come prepared, don't worry, there are plenty of outfitters to get you geared up. Fly-fish for Atlantic and Kokanee Salmon and Brown, Rainbow or Brook trout in the Deschutes River and other lakes.
