I am not a cat or a hat or a bat,
....can you imagine that?
I am not a breeze a wheeze
.... or even a sneeze!
I am simply in awe,
.........if you please!
Dr. Seuss is on the loose. His writing is soo good, he makes me feel like a silly goose! As a poet, when I need to be inspired, to get back to the basics, I do not turn to Frost, or Whitman, or Dylan, I turn to that Whimsical and magical creature....The Cat in the HAT. Alternatively, on occasion when my poetry is on the lam.. I will simply revisit... Green Eggs and Ham.
Dr. Seuss's books are the epitome of the creative use of poetic devices to reach into the basic levels of human emotions. Emotions that are, within children, not yet touched by the harsh realities of life. They reach into the innocent minds of children and bring forth the warmth, humor, and basic curiosity inherent in all children.
When we look at his books we also find the clever way he uses the visual arts to add meaning to the words. Meanings which children can associate the words with pictures easily, Thus enhancing thier cognitive skills and reading comprehension skills. Employing this combinative technique, he effectively provides an even more lasting impression on the young mind.
What parent, after exposing their child to his books, has not at some time or another, seen their child sitting quietly on the floor, or in their bed, just thumbing thru one of his books? Smiling, or just plain giggling? Pointing their little fingers at the pictures, uttering some of the words, making the connection between the words you may have read to them and the images they are looking at. Even those that are still to young to truly read the words are captivated by the visuals, of the actions and antics of the various characters.
Should you think the books are for children, just children, think agian!. A close look at his books and we can see they are more then playground childlike nursery rhymes. They are far more then that. They are...TOOLS... Which can bring parents together with thier children ,in quality time with thier children. Helping to solidify the bond between child and parent.
As the adult reads to the child, the child connects with the adult. Connects the enjoyable sensations with the party that is reading it to them. In addition, dear reader, there are sublime messages intended for the adult reader. Questions of morality, ethics, Political correctness, examples of the powers to be found in Hope and Charity, and LOVE. Thru the use of metaphors, the adult is also the target of Dr. Seuss. Not in a self proclaimed demi-god style. But thru the eyes of a poet. A very good one!
So off I go now
.. with a wink and a bow
.....Hoping I have sounded,
.......at least smarter then a cow!
And to DR Seuss
.....I can only say
...........WOW!............................Peace
