All it takes is a little creativity to make a small bathroom an attractive room in your home rather than a trouble spot. I live in a small house with small rooms and an especially small bathroom. There are no built-in cabinets or drawers in my bathroom so I have had to be very creative in my attempt to make this bathroom both attractive and workable.
I wanted to keep a sense of openness in this small space. I chose to use wire baskets and chrome shelves. Being able to see through the wires increases the feeling of openness. I have a three tier silver shelf that hangs on the wall. I keep items such as hairspray, extra soap, and hand lotion on this shelf. On the top level of this shelf I keep a basket of first aid supplies. Since there are no drawers in my bathroom I purchased a three drawer cabinet that fits in a small area beside the sink. I use this to store wash cloths, make-up, and various other bathroom supplies. I hung a small attractive basket on the inside doorknob that provides additional storage space for small items. I have two mirrors and two towel racks. That leaves very little space for anything else on the walls. However, I love plants and believe they add life to any room so I have a small glass vase for rooting cuttings that fits into a wire hanger where I keep something green growing at all times.
Fortunately, there are numerous types of over-the-door hanging storage items available. These are very useful when trying to create storage space in a small room. The three tier wire hanging baskets that are mostly used in kitchens for storing produce are also useful in a bathroom. If there is a corner of the room that is somewhat very precious wasted space, hanging these baskets there will give you extra storage space. I believe it is best to keep the color scheme simple in a small place. Lots of patterns tend to make the space look smaller. If you plan to hang a mirror in your small bathroom you might want to consider hanging a cabinet with a mirror on the door. This can serve a dual purpose. Any item that serves more than one purpose is a welcome addition to any small space.
There is no space in my bathroom for a clothes hamper. As a solution to this, I purchased a mesh clothes basket that can easily be moved from one place to another. I keep it in the shower (with the shower curtain pulled) and remove it before getting in the shower. Small spaces are a great opportunity to be creative.
One of the most important things to remember when dealing with living in and decorating small spaces is that a positive attitude makes everything better. View each challenge as an opportunity to release your creative ideas.
