How to tell if your house is haunted

by T.L. Winters

How to tell if your house is haunted? One good sign would be the bleeding walls. Maybe even the reflection in the mirror...that isn't you. Or the fact that every time you walk into the kitchen the chairs are balancing on one leg on top of the table. Being pushed from behind even though you've been alone all day, would get your attention. These are tell-tale signs that shouldn't be ignored. Most hauntings that really want to get a message across can get your attention if they really want to.

Other signs that could be contributed to less dastardly reasons and therefore ignored would be the interruption of electrical power that seems to have a pattern. Morse Code is a good give-a-way otherwise just checking your connects could (or not) relieve you of some anxiety. Hearing voices when you are not on medication (or should be)and/or seeing an apparition that is not alcohol induced could be explained by any scientific reasoning if there was a scientist available. Otherwise, a check of your vitals might be in order.

Hauntings are not uncommon. Neither is dementia. A haunted house has become a valuable commodity. You could get an hour on the SCIFI Channel to tell your story. You could receive a gift certificate for a "Cleansing" or "De-bunking". You could charge admission on Halloween (or Easter...depending on the type of Haunting)or you could become the front page feature in a magazine like "Weird NJ" (one of my favorites). A Made-For-TV movie is not out of the question.

Do I sound like a great pessimist? I am not. I DO believe that some people actually wish for their house to be haunted and therefore can convince themselves that it is true. I also believe that some people would conjure up the dead if they could make a dollar from it. And I do believe that some houses are haunted. I grew up in one.

This isn't something that you would normally go public with. We didn't have bleeding walls and the kitchen chairs never balanced on top of the table. We didn't have Morse Code through the television, but we DID have it turn on when it wasn't even plugged in. The kitchen was quite large with a lot of cabinets. In the middle of the night we would hear loud banging in there until one of us would get up to go see what was causing the racket. Every door, even the refrigerator, would be wide open. All the drawers pulled out. That happened for three nights in a row. That's when we decided to bury my newly deceased grandfather in his own grave instead of on top of the mother-in-law
