A Tribute to You, Mom

Dear Mom,

You instilled in me wisdom.
I care for our children with
tender care the way you always
cared for me.
I bandage their wounds and reassure them
Just as you would do.

I said I would never be like you and dad
And now I realize I am more like you
Than I thought I would be and after all
that isn't so bad
I find myself saying your words of comfort
Doing for others
Just as you would do.

You taught me love
Especially the love of children
And now I have my own
They were "your" grandchildren
None of them had my blood
But you claimed them as your own.
It's that acceptance that taught me what love was.

You haven't been forgotten
I still remember the day you left us
You left with dignity and pride
Fighting until the very end as you always did
Giving it your best
It was time for you to go
You needed your rest.
You taught all of us lessons when you were here.
